More than half of Russians are dying because of alcohol

More than half of premature deaths in Russia linked to alcohol, reports AP. These data were obtained in a joint study of Russian and British scientists, whose findings are published in The Lancet.
The researchers analyzed the causes of death of 60 416 inhabitants of Tomsk, Barnaul and Biisk, died at the age of from 15 to 74 years between 1990 and 2001. Family members of 48 557 deaths have provided information on use of alcohol dead, as well as other factors contributing to death.
Researchers found that 43 082 died from causes related to alcohol and tobacco. The remaining 5475 people, researchers looked at as a control group.
The study found that compared with the control group the probability of death from alcohol poisoning to people who drink was 22 times higher . Among alcoholics chance of accidental death or injuries of almost six times higher than in the control group.
Also, for drinkers of pancreatic disease more likely in the 6 , 7-fold, liver disease – in 6,2 times, tuberculosis – in 4,1 times, the mouth and throat cancer – nearly 3.5 times. Researchers also found that alcohol is linked more than half (52 percent) of deaths for people aged 15 to 54 years. For men the figure was 59 percent for women – 33 percent, said MedPortal.
According to researchers, the data obtained are not unique to those regions where the study, but and for the whole territory of the Russian Federation as a whole.
